Downtown Los Angeles’ only monthly gallery guide in print, distributed during the month’s largest art event and locally afterwards in the Historic Core and surrounding areas.
FEATURED: Art Meets Architecture: Main Street is that core of Downtown
America, the great equalizer, where rich and poor converge, crossing paths and for one instant, stepping into each other’s footfalls. It is here at 446 South Main Street, where photographer, Gary Leonard has gathered 300 Angelinos to stand for portraits. Attached to the corrugated gates of the Arcade Theatre, the paper mache wings of artist, Colette Miller, serve as backdrop. As a unifying force, these wings provoke everyone from mayor to meter reader, to radiate with seraphic goodwill and to inhabit these new appendages with the intent of becoming the everyday angels, for which our city was made. The Fine Arts Gallery exhibition will include 17 portraits curated from the Angels on Main Street series. Photographer Gary Leonard is a Los Angeles Icon who has been photographing Los Angeles for more than thirty years. Leonard’s photos have appeared in the LA Weekly, the LA Reader, Rolling Stone Magazine, Interview Magazine, People Magazine, Der Spiegel, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times & Los Angeles Magazine. His column Take My Picture appears weekly in LA Observed & in The Downtown News, where his photography is a regular staple. Leonard has published three books; Make the Music Go Bang, Take My Picture Gary & Symphony in Steel. His photography is in many collections. These portraits, ranging from dignitaries to local denizens, capture Angelinos, who despite their differences show a collective desire to be more like the angels that name our city. Opening Night Artist Reception. May 8th 6-8 pm Live Jazz. Fine Arts Gallery ~ Fine Arts Building. 811 West 7th Street ~ Los Angeles. www.artmeetarchitecture.com
